Veiled Chameleon Care Guide

Veiled chameleons are an interesting but delicate pet. They originate from the sandy deserts and dry grasslands of Yemen, Aden, and southwestern Saudi Arabia. These solitary, slow-moving lizards prefer to live alone and capture insect prey using their very long tongues. They can change color from bright green to nearly black based on mood and temperature.

Adult males can be distinguished from females by their large casques or crests on their heads. In juveniles, small tarsal “spurs” at the back end of the hind feet indicate males. Life expectancy for pet veiled chameleons is typically 4–8 years.


Housing

Screen cages are recommended — such as the ZooMed ReptiBreeze — as they provide superior ventilation. Cages should be taller than they are wide, as chameleons are arboreal. Glass aquariums typically do not provide enough ventilation for this species. Solitary housing is required.

  • Juveniles: 16″ × 16″ × 30″
  • Adults: minimum 18″ × 18″ × 3ft — larger is better

Furnish the cage with vines or branches for climbing. Live plants such as Ficus benjamina, golden pothos, or umbrella trees are good options. Ficus benjamina are excellent for climbing but can produce irritating sap when pruned — remove them from the cage for pruning and return only after the sap has dried.

Substrate is not strictly required since chameleons spend most of their time perching. Nonparticulate substrates such as cage carpet are safest. If using particulate substrates (coconut fiber, cypress mulch, leaf litter, sphagnum moss, reptile topsoil, or bioactive setups), install a drainage system, monitor for mold growth, replace frequently, and watch closely to ensure the chameleon is not accidentally ingesting substrate when feeding. Egg-laying females will need a suitable nesting area provided.

Temperature

Provide heat with an appropriately sized heat lamp:

  • Warm side: 85–90°F
  • Cool side: no lower than 75°F
  • Basking spot (near top of cage): 95–100°F

Ensure climbing branches do not get too close to the bulb — the chameleon may burn its casque or back. Monitor temperatures with a digital probe thermometer or infrared laser thermometer. A reptile thermostat is recommended for safer, more accurate temperature control.

UVB Lighting

UVB lighting is essential for chameleons to properly absorb calcium and harden their bones. UVB cannot pass through standard glass — placing an indoor reptile near a window does not provide adequate UVB. Zoo Med or Arcadia brand UVB bulbs are recommended; use the 10.0 for most chameleons. The Zoo Med Powersun UVB mercury vapor bulb produces both heat and UVB but should only be used in large enclosures.

  • Fluorescent UVB bulbs should be positioned so the reptile can get within 12–18″ of the bulb — use branches or logs to allow climbing closer if needed
  • Mercury vapor bulbs produce significant heat — place a minimum of 12″ from the basking spot
  • Dense screening can block up to 50% of UVB — multiple bulbs may be needed for cages with very dense screens

UVB lighting should be on for 12 hours per day and can be set on a timer. Replace UVB bulbs every 6–12 months depending on the model — the UVB-emitting coating wears off even when the bulb still produces visible light.

Humidity & Misting

Maintain humidity between 40–60%, monitored with a digital hygrometer. An automatic misting system (such as the ExoTerra Monsoon or MistKing) set to run intermittently throughout the day is the easiest way to maintain humidity — adjust settings as needed. Aim the mister so droplets form on perches and plants, as chameleons drink from droplets rather than standing water. Clean misting equipment regularly to prevent bacterial and mold buildup.

Diet & Feeding

Veiled chameleons are primarily insectivores, though this species is known to occasionally nibble on foliage such as golden pothos. Feed a variety of feeder insects daily. Feeder insects should be smaller than the width between the chameleon’s eyes.

Good feeder insect options include:

  • Crickets, mealworms, superworms, waxworms, hornworms
  • Soldierfly larvae, silkworms, and dubia roaches — these are especially nutritious

Supplements

Captive reptile diets are commonly imbalanced in vitamins and minerals — particularly too high in phosphorus and too low in calcium. This can lead to metabolic bone disease (nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism).

  • Calcium carbonate (without D3) — e.g., Zoo Med ReptiCal — sprinkle on food daily
  • Multivitamin containing true vitamin A — e.g., Zoo Med Reptivite — 1–2 times per week. If housed indoors, use Reptivite with D3

When choosing a multivitamin, verify that the vitamin A source is retinol acetate or retinol palmitate — not beta-carotene only. Many insect-eating reptiles cannot convert beta-carotene into usable vitamin A. Vitamin A is essential for healthy eyes, eyelids, skin, mouth, trachea, lungs, muscles, bones, and reproductive function.

Enrichment

Reptiles benefit from environmental enrichment to encourage species-appropriate behaviors and increase their choices. Simple examples include varied hides, substrates, and climbing structures. More complex options include target training or puzzle feeding. Reptelligence and Reptile Enrichment and Training (RET) are Facebook groups with resources for reptile enrichment and training ideas. Veterinary Care

An annual wellness examination and fecal screening for parasites is recommended for all reptiles.
