Uromastyx spp.
Uromastyx — also known as spiny-tailed lizards — are a genus of terrestrial, diurnal, desert-adapted medium to large lizards native to northern Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. Commonly kept species include the Mali, Egyptian, Moroccan, Saharan/Niger, and ornate uromastyx. Size, color, and pattern vary considerably by species and sex. Males are typically larger, with larger femoral pores and hemipenal bulges, and may be more colorful than females in some species.
Uromastyx have nasal salt glands that help excrete excess salt through sneezing, which dries as a fine white powder around the nostrils — this is completely normal. With proper care, their life expectancy is 15–20+ years.
Enclosure
Minimum enclosure size for most adult uromastyx is 48″L × 24″W × 24″H, though larger species such as the Egyptian uromastyx do better in an 8ft × 4ft × 4ft or larger enclosure. Front-opening enclosures with a mesh top for ventilation are preferred. Juveniles can be temporarily housed in smaller setups (20–40 gallon). Solitary housing is recommended in most cases, though small harems (one male with multiple females) can work in larger setups.
Provide at least one hide on both the warm and cool sides of the enclosure, as well as a humid hide filled with periodically moistened substrate. For the basking area, a Retes stack is recommended — a multilayered, stepped basking structure made of secured flat wood or rocks that provides crevices at multiple levels for hiding and thermoregulation, mimicking their natural environment.
Enrichment items can include cork bark flats, cholla wood, branches or rocks for climbing, magnetic ledges, and live nontoxic plants (which may be eaten).
Substrate
Substrate choices are somewhat controversial. Uromastyx appreciate the ability to burrow and can be housed on fine sand or excavator clay, but these carry a risk of ingestion and intestinal blockage. If using loose/particulate substrates, always feed off the substrate and monitor for any signs of ingestion. Edible particulate substrate (millet seed and lentils) is another option that does not pose an impaction risk if ingested. Nonparticulate alternatives such as tile, flagstone, paper towels, or newspaper are also suitable.
Temperature
Provide a temperature gradient using a basking bulb or ceramic heat emitter:
- Warm side (daytime): 90–100°F
- Cool side (daytime): down to 80°F
- Basking spot: 110–130°F
- Nighttime: drop to 70–80°F (a 10–15°F drop is recommended)
Monitor temperatures with a digital probe thermometer or infrared laser thermometer. A reptile thermostat is recommended for safer and more accurate temperature control. Heat sources should not produce light at night to avoid disrupting the photoperiod. Heat rocks should be avoided — they pose a serious risk of severe burns.
Humidity
This species is adapted to arid environments and requires low ambient humidity of 20–30%, measured with a digital hygrometer. A dehumidifier may be necessary in some areas. A small shallow water dish can be provided 1–2 times weekly for several hours and cleaned frequently, though uromastyx obtain most of their moisture from their diet.
UVB Lighting
UVB lighting is essential for uromastyx to properly absorb calcium from their diet. UVB cannot pass through standard glass, so placing an indoor reptile near a window does not provide adequate UVB. Reptiles housed indoors must have artificial UVB lighting from bulbs specifically designed for reptiles.
Recommended bulbs include high-output options such as the Zoo Med ReptiSun 10.0, Arcadia Desert 12%, or Arcadia D3 Dragon 14%. The Zoo Med Powersun UVB mercury vapor bulb produces both heat and UVB but should only be used in large enclosures.
- Fluorescent UVB bulbs should be positioned so the reptile can get within 12–18 inches of the bulb — use branches or logs to allow climbing closer if needed
- Mercury vapor bulbs produce significant heat — place a minimum of 12 inches from the basking spot
- Dense screening can block up to 50% of UVB — multiple bulbs may be needed for cages with very dense screens
UVB lighting should be on 10–14 hours per day, varying with the season to match natural outdoor photoperiods. Replace UVB bulbs every 6–12 months depending on the model — the UVB-emitting coating wears off even when the bulb still produces visible light.
Diet & Feeding
Uromastyx are predominantly herbivores, though some species and juveniles will occasionally eat insects. Insects should be offered only as a rare treat — once weekly for juveniles, no more than once monthly for adults, limited to one feeder insect. Variety in the plant-based diet is extremely important.
Dark leafy greens should make up the majority of the diet and can include romaine, escarole, kale, endive, cabbage, turnip greens, collard greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens, arugula, bok choy, and cilantro.
Supplement with finely grated vegetables such as acorn, butternut, and spaghetti squash, spineless cactus pads, carrots, sweet potato, cucumber, zucchini, green peppers, green beans, and peas.
A bowl of dry split peas, lentils, small beans, and millet can be provided 1–2 times weekly, or a commercial mix such as Uro Grit can be used instead. Edible blossoms are also recommended — hibiscus, dandelion, rose petals, squash blossoms, and nasturtium are all good options.
Fruit is high in sugar and can cause diarrhea — offer only infrequently in small quantities as a treat. Berries, fig, papaya, apple, and melons are favorites.
Commercial herbivore diets such as Mazuri herbivorous reptile pellets, Uro Spice, Uro Bloom, ZooMed Natural Grassland Tortoise Food, or Arcadia Optimised52 can be soaked and used as a salad topper 1–2 times weekly for additional dietary diversity.
- Juveniles: feed as much as they wish daily
- Adults: feed every 1–3 days, with 1–2 fasting days per week to help prevent obesity
Supplementation:
- Calcium carbonate powder (without D3) — e.g., Zoo Med ReptiCal — sprinkled over food 2–3 times weekly
- Multivitamin containing true vitamin A (such as Zoo Med Reptivite) — once weekly to once every 2 weeks. If housed indoors, use Reptivite with D3
Brumation
Many uromastyx brumate in the wild during cooler temperatures (60–65°F) and can benefit from a brumation period of 8–12 weeks during winter. Whether to brumate your uromastyx depends on the species and the individual animal’s health status. A pre-brumation veterinary checkup is recommended each season to ensure your pet is healthy enough to undergo brumation.
Veterinary Care
An annual wellness examination and fecal screening for parasites is recommended for all reptiles. Seek veterinary care promptly if you notice any of the following:
- Lumps or bumps in the skin or joints (may indicate bacterial infection, gout, or nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism)
- Runny stools
- Dark or dull coloration
- Lethargy or poor appetite
- Sunken eyes
Note: Medicating uromastyx orally can be challenging as their jaws close extremely tightly and their teeth interdigitate in a way that resists standard techniques for opening a lizard’s mouth. However, all commonly kept uromastyx have a small gap between their two front teeth large enough to accommodate a small catheter — water and liquid medications can be trickled through this gap to ease administration.
